べっ甲とは
べっ甲とは、玳瑁（タイマイ）という海亀の甲羅のことです。
べっ甲細工の良し悪しを決めるのは彫刻、艶、そして曲げ具合。
甲羅の模様は全て違う為、最高の美しさを引き出すのが職人技の魅せどころ。
そして、良い製品には色気が宿る。
その色気を与えるのが、熱。
気候の微妙な変化にも敏感に影響される為、熱加減は一筋縄ではいかない。
熱した鉄板で圧締し、繋げ合わせたり形を整える際は温度が低いとたやすく割れる。
かと言って、少しでも熱くしようものなら、たちまち焦げてしまう。
ここで長年の経験がものを言うのです。
切り出してから研磨まで一つの作業が、べっ甲との真剣な対話。
そっと手に取ると、ほんのりと温かい。
